The Independent Components of Characters are 'Strokes'

چکیده
What are the natural features of hand-written characters and how to arrive at them automatically? We apply independent components analysis on hand-written characters. Independent components analysis extracts the underlying statistically independent signals from a mixure of them. We expect strokes to be the independent components of handwritten characters. Our findings show that stroke-like features emerge as a result of the analysis confirming the above intuition. This finding is significant since it gives an automatic procedures for extracting stroke-like features from multilingual character data sets. We use these features for handwritten digit recognition using a very simple classifier. The classifier is chosen to be simple so that the quality of input feature set can be evaluated. The recognition results indicate that the features arrived at by independent component analysis are useful.

In this paper a new method for the online recognition of handwritten Persian characters has been proposed which uses a set of simple features and Support Vector Machine (SVM) as a classifier. The task of preprocessing allows us to equalize feature vectors from different characters. This algorithm is implemented in two steps. In the first step, input character is classified into one of eighteen ...
متن کاملCharacter complexity and redundancy in writing systems over human history.
A writing system is a visual notation system wherein a repertoire of marks, or strokes, is used to build a repertoire of characters. Are there any commonalities across writing systems concerning the rules governing how strokes combine into characters; commonalities that might help us identify selection pressures on the development of written language? In an effort to answer this question we exa...
متن کاملSeeking Meaning in a Space Made out of Strokes, Radicals, Characters and Compounds
Chinese characters can be compared to a molecular structure: a character is analogous to a molecule, radicals are like atoms, calligraphic strokes correspond to elementary particles, and when characters form compounds, they are like molecular structures. In chemistry the conjunction of all of these structural levels produces what we perceive as matter. In language, the conjunction of strokes, r...
متن کاملDynamic Space Warping of Strokes for Recognition of Online Handwritten Characters
This paper suggests a scheme for classifying online handwritten characters, based on dynamic space warping of strokes within the characters. A method for segmenting components into strokes using velocity profiles is proposed. Each stroke is a simple arbitrary shape and is encoded using three attributes. Correspondence between various strokes is established using Dynamic Space Warping. A distanc...
متن کاملOn-line recognition of cursive Korean characters using neural networks
This paper proposes an efficient method for on-line recognition of cursive Korean characters. Since Korean characters are composed of two or three graphemes in two dimensions, strokes, primitive components of the characters, are usually warped into a cursive form. To classify automatically such cursive strokes, an Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) neural network is used. Fuzzy membership function...
